Behind The Name
Cattails are often a symbol of peace, or an end to conflict.
Before I began working at Prairie Creek Farms, I helped out here and there after moving back home from NY. Uncertain if I wanted to continue farming.
One day that I’d come out to help, Nate asked me to take a drive to talk. He drove us out to the back pond, on the far south end of the pasture. There we sat, and talked about my dreams, my hesitations with committing to farming, and more. As we talked, I remember watching the cattails sway in the breeze along the pond’s edge. Then, all I remember, Nate looked at me and said, “Morgan, you’re a farmer.” And deep down, I knew that he was right. And I’m sure he’ll love reading that.
Not long after that day, I started working at Prairie Creek. And despite the seemingly endless chaos of farm activity, working at Prairie Creek marked the ending of an era of conflict and unrest in my life. It quickly became a place of peace and rest that I had long searched for. And still is, despite the madness.
To this day, when I find myself battling pain, grief, heartbreak, or sickness, or overwhelmed with joy, gratitude, and grace, I'll return to that spot by the back pond. To sit and watch the cattails peacefully and effortlessly sway.
Owning my own dairy has been something I’ve dreamed of for years now. Cattail Creamery is finally that dream coming true. The name pays homage to my favorite place on the farm, and the moment I realized I was in fact meant to be a farmer.
